The baby food makers are packed away, as are the little containers for food I used to make for Connor. Now, he eats everything that we do. He loves to feed himself to the point where I can no longer give him hot cereal for breakfast. Now it's pancakes and waffles and French toast and cheese omelets. He loves buttered toast and sliced fruit for breakfast too.
We've gotten more daring in the food department by allowing Connor to try some spicier foods. We started slowly by cooking with spices like cumin. Now, he eats things like enchilada sauce, chili and salsa. It's honestly surprising to see him enjoy and handle the relative amount of heat in certain foods. But I only let him try things that to me aren't spicy at all because my tolerance is pretty high. The same goes for sour foods. So far, Connor adores things like lemons, sauerkraut and pickles. He has tried crab, salmon, tuna, mahi mahi and liverwurst. Loves them all! I continue to hope and pray he won't suddenly turn picky on me. It's a relief that so far his only quirks have involved his insistence on feeding himself. Oh, that and insisting on sharing his food with us. :) He LOVES to share.
He is practicing using and spoon and fork. He tries hard to poke food or scoop it onto a spoon but that remains difficult. If we place food on the utensil for him, he is great at putting it into his mouth. He holds his fork and spoon very well and hasn't missed his mouth once.
Connor continues to sleep well from 7-7 every night. And lucky for me he still naps every day, moving his morning nap closer to 11am. Hopefully by 18 months it will be a long afternoon nap. :)
Connor is saying Mama and Dada pretty clearly now but isn't really talking yet. He sure knows a lot of words though. We ask him things and he will know what we're talking about. I can hand him a raisin and tell him to give it to Mudpie and he'll walk over to her cage and do exactly that.
He is eager to be helpful. After I change his diaper and roll it up to secure the mess, he jumps up and grabs it, runs into his room, pops open the diaper pail and drops the diaper in and shuts the lid. He just loves doing this. :)
Connor also feeds the dog and rabbit. He loves giving Jonas his nightly cookies and raisins to Mudpie.
I am happy to report that Connor's new love of books just continues to grow. He now brings us every book on his bookshelf to be read to. He will also go put his books back on the shelf after he's done. The funny thing is, he thinks our DVDs are books too! They are right next to the books and Connor will bring us a DVD and look at us expectantly. He seems so bummed that the DVD isn't a book.
We go to a class at the community center each week called Wee Fit. Our group of about 7 babies and parents has gone really well. The teacher alternates between free play and activities we do gathered in a circle. The babies exercise to music and learn to play with balls, balloons, etc. Connor's favorite game involves a song that the kids shake rattle balls to. Different parts of the song call for them to shake slow or fast, high or low. He really loves it! He also loves the balloons and doing the moves to the "Wheels on the Bus" and "Row Row Row Your Boat" songs. He always looks around the circle in awe, apparently amazed that everyone is doing the same things. :) We've enjoyed the others in our class, especially one mom and son. The son is just 5 days younger than Connor and the seem to like playing near each other. The mom and I have clicked, so it'll be nice to end the class with a new friend. The class is over in just a couple weeks and then we'll need to pick a new one. So far only two choices come up in our age and price range: another baby fit class or an art class. I'm a little afraid of what Connor would do in an art class but we might be brave and try it. :) One day we'll do Kindermusik when we have the money.
Connor continues to walk really well. He tries to run but catches himself before he trips. We've noticed that he is careful and graceful when he moves. He still falls of course, but outside he is especially careful. We have a great deal of fun going to parks and watching him run around on the grass.
I have a lot of pictures to edit and load here, but for now here are just a few of us this week.
This is so Connor. Running behind me and making a face behind my back! He makes me laugh constantly. We try to take a Mommy & Son picture every month or so. It amazes me to see how much bigger Connor is every time we take a new picture!
Eating his first whole apple. He had so much fun even though he only nibbled off tiny bits.
Last but not least, there is one more cute thing that Connor started doing this month. He has always slept with his stuffed Piglet from Winnie the Pooh. But now he holds onto Piglet almost all day. He carries Piglet around and likes to chew on his ears. It's really funny and very cute to see him attached to a special stuffed animal!
Happy 13 Months Connor!!
