The rescue is called Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue. The people that run the rescue do an amazing job of pairing you up with bunnies that would suit you best. We met several and honestly, they were all so wonderful. How on earth do you choose? We finally narrowed our choices down to two and I was in tears trying to figure out who to pick. One of the volunteers told us that Choco, a bunny who fell asleep in Nick's arms, was actually quite the fireball and may not work for first-time bunny owners like us.
I told Nick he'd have to choose. I am terribly emotional about things like this, so it was too hard for me. I wanted to take all the bunnies home. :) In the end, Nick fell in love with a sweet brown bunny named Mudpie. The volunteers were thrilled we were taking her. She's so sweet and quiet, she usually gets overlooked and has needed a home for a long time. She really is as sweet as can be! She was very relaxed and comfortable with us. We got a whole bunch of bunny supplies and took our little girl home. Here are some pictures of us at the rescue picking up our new bunny, Mudpie's first day at home, and the cats' inspection. :)
You may be wondering why Mudpie has such a big setup and why she isn't in a cage, or a hutch. Bunnies need a lot of room to play and exercise, and it's good to have their food and water and litter box and everything all in one area. Also, the bunnies from the rescue were all abandoned, abused, or unwanted and have often spent way too much time restricted to a small cage. These rescued buns now deserve a much better life. We moved around a few things and think Mudpie's living area fits in just fine.
You also may be wondering how the cats are reacting. They are very curious, but not acting the least bit defensive or mean. Harvey was the only one foolish enough to leap into Mudpie's pen, and Mudpie chased him off right away. Harvey was a lot more scared and upset than Mudpie! Somehow, I doubt he'll try that again! :)
Like the rabbit rescue told us, rabbits aren't exactly the timid little woodland creatures we often picture them as. They are highly intelligent, playful and independent. They act a lot like a cat actually! :) They fully expected that Mudpie would dominate the cats and not take any nonsense from them. So far, so good! We're hoping in the weeks to come, all three will make friends and play together. We do plan on letting Mudpie out for exercise and bonding while we're at home. I'm sure you'll be seeing lots more pictures of her in the future! :)
