Our New Bunny

We're not crazy, people just recognize that we have that look. The "I love animals and will cry if you tell me one sad story" look.

We made the um, mistake of announcing at a party that we were off to get hay for our rabbit later.

Immediately, as if teleported, a woman appeared at my side. "Oh, you have a bunny? You want another one? By the way, you have the word SUCKER tattooed on your forehead. That's why I like you already."

The short version of the story is that the woman's daughter knows a lady who confessed she no longer wanted her pet rabbit and had plans to release her out into a field. To live as wild rabbits do, happily and well fed. Ha. The daughter stopped her and rescued the bunny, whom was currently caged in a room to be kept safe from a house full of dogs and cats that were constantly trying to get in the room and eat her.

Sigh.

We took her, of course. She's very sweet.

Nick named her Clarabelle since her old name was silly and totally unfitting. If we had known her personality a little better, we might have given her a less genteel name and called her Eating Machine or Thumper.

She had never eaten fresh veggies before and at first did not want any. Now she jumps at us and tears the lettuce/kale/carrot/cilantro out of our hands.

She is a good house rabbit though. She runs around, plays, hangs out and doesn't chew on anything. Mudpie doesn't like her yet though, so we currently have them separated.

You try to be a good person, taking in poor helpless animals and showering them with kale. Then the animals realize there are THREE of them and only ONE of you and they team up against you. Thank God bunnies don't actually make noise because then you can ignore them fairly well. That is until the laser beam eyes suck you in and the nose-twitching-of-disapproval catches your eye. Josie has taken to sitting with the rabbits and they all three stare at me in unison.

YOU WILL FEED US EARLY. OR DIE.

This is usually when Connor is napping (a full 3 hours before dinner!). And I am trying to rest my weary body. These animals have no consideration whatsoever.

It's funny, Josie comes across as a mean, grouchy cat but Clarabelle loves her. Josie just stares at her in superiority.

Good Lord, there is rabbit poop EVERYWHERE

Clarabelle is a year old. She is young and fast. We can hardly catch her to get her back in her cage. One day, at one point, Josie and Connor and I all had her cornered and she still managed to zip away.

I finally got a laundry basket and instructed Connor to herd her into it. He did great...that kid will be a mighty fine ranch hand one of these days! We may try a lasso sometime, but that day the basket ploy was a success.

There is no need for a gym when you have a 2 year old and a rabbit like Clarabelle!

Connor sure has fun chasing her and we enjoy her sparkling personality. However, I'll need to plant a field of vegetables to keep these rabbits fed and happy.

The pictures of the bunnies with red eye make them look demonic. Which kind of fits with what you write later about them ganging up on you. ;)
